DIZZY AND FRIENDS IN HAVANA 1985.
Night In Tunisia
I cant find the personnel for this anywhere. What really knocks me out about this is how Dizzy showcases Sandoval. He was never afraid to let another trumpet player shine. Unlike another trumpet player who will remain unmentioned, but I saw an early performance of Jazz at Lincoln Center that this unmentioned guy was leading. They had put together a monster of a band including a trumpet section to die for. I remember specifically that Conti Condoli, Snooky Young and Clark Terry were in the section. On one tune all three of them were taking solos, Clark Terry was the last before it was this guys turn. Everyone was playing 3 choruses but when Clark Terry played, this guy stepped all over him, cutting him off by starting to play as Terry began his 2nd chorus. Everyone look surprised and Terry was incredulous. But Diz was always a professional enough to never do this
This was a live recording of Dizzy and friends in Havana in 1985. "Night in Tunisia" was composed by Dizzy in 1942.
In 1n 1985, Dizzy Gillespie returned to Cuba after an absence of 40 years. He was one of the first American jazz musicians to add Afro-Cuban elements to his music, and Cubans to his big band. Most notably, in the 40s, was percussionist, Chano Pozo.
A then-young Arturo Sandoval (trumpet) and Walter Davis Jr. (piano) sit in with Dizzy's band. Bari sax player, Sayyd Abdul al-Khabbyr, is remarkable.. Great fun!
