BILL HOLMAN - Homage

Woodchopper's Ball
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fx1nLbY6yc

Voted by acclimation by every musician as well as arrangers, greatest Big Band Arranger on the planet. Willis began his professional career as a tenor saxophonist for Stan Kenton who soon began putting his arranging talents to good use. He has written for virtually every well known jazz big band around as well as his own.with which he has recorded a dozen albums. For the past 30 years, Holman has fronted the most sought-after rehearsal band in L.A.  Once when a side man was asked why he continued to play in Holman's band so often and for so long for pay far below that he usually commanded, the reply was because it is such a great band with the greatest charts around.

MAYNARD FERGUSON - One More Trip To Birdland

MANTECA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-2Yr6c8G6s

Even at the age of 67, Maynard Ferguson shows on this CD that he could still belt out the high notes. His "Big Bop Noveau" band consists of four trumpets, trombonist Tom Garling (who takes a rockish guitar solo on "Birdland"), Matt Wallace and Chris Farr on saxophones, and a rhythm section. With the exception of "Birdland," the music is strictly bebop, with plenty of screaming trumpet and heated playing; Wallace's alto outbursts often take honors. Highlights include "Manteca," "Cajun Cookin'," "Milestones" and a hyper "It Don't Mean a Thing."

JIMMY SMITH - Christmas Cookin'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifXjjHWmOC4&list=PLFedyJmIJcGZCsHWEpNkzBfs5OxwE3I7s

This Christmas jazz album has five selections in which organist Jimmy Smith is joined by a big band arranged by either Billy Byers or Al Cohn. The remaining selections feature Smith with a variety of trios; guitarist Wes Montgomery is heard on "Baby It's Cold Outside," one of two "bonus" cuts taken from other sessions that help to fill up this otherwise brief set. Smith is fine on "Jingle Bells," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and two versions of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and, even if nothing all that unusual occurs, the performances can serve as high-quality background music during the Christmas season.

ILLINOIS JACQUET - Live in Burghausen, Germany

https://youtu.be/Php9CKG040I

In 1981 Tenor Sax legend Illinois Jacquet pursued his career-long dream of assembling a truly great big jazz band in the tradition of his mentors, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, bands with whom he recorded and toured in his youth. He would apply all the wisdom and experience he gleaned as their sideman, as well as from his years of leadership over his many small groups, and would include songs he made famous with his “little big band” of the 1940s. The Illinois Jacquet Big Band was filled with luminaries and young stars, but unfortunately would only record one studio album entitled “Jacquet’s Got It” on Atlantic Records, in 1987. Released now for the first time is a live performance of that band in all their swinging glory. The place is Burghausen, Germany, and the year is 1996, featuring a younger lineup than our previous release, but swinging hard nonetheless. Yalloppin’ Hounds’ cohorts Joey “G-Clef” Cavaseno, and Brian “Lord” Sledge are featured, along with Mike Grey, the son of trombone legend Al Grey of Count Basie fan, and Gray Sargent, Jacquet’s long time guitarist discovery.
