GERALD WILSON

GERALD WILSON
Before Motown'
Gerald Wilson, composer, arranger and band leader has been creating new and inovative music all his career. His orchestration theory is often indeed very much out of the main stream. I heard him explain it one time. To him the standard chord changes were only a road map. His arranging often totally rewrote the changes by beginning the chord on the upper extensions. Forinstance, and greatly simplified, if we have a standard C, Dmin G7 C but begin them on the 7th say, the progression would be Bb, C, F7 Bb You still have a ii V progression but the key changes harmonically but the melody is still in C. There is more to it then this and Im sure it’s not really correct but you get the idea of what he was doing.
Featuring: trumpeters Jon Faddis, Bobby Rodriguez and Jimmy Owens; trombonists Dennis Wilson, Luis Bonilla and Doug Purviance; saxophonists Steve Wilson, Kamasi Washington, Antonio Hart, Jackie Kelso and Ronnie Cuber; pianists Brian ORourke and Renee Rosnes; bassists Trey Henry, Peter Washington and Todd Coolman; drummers Mel Lee and Lewis Nash.
