Bruce Lofgren Jazz Pirates
"Beer Pressure"
Guitarist Bruce Lofgren occasionally fronts an 18 member big band he calls Leviathan " a beast of many colors." On this Sunday November the 19th Lofgren and Leviathan will be at The Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa Beach from 11 am to 3 pm. A $10 cover. The band has 4 reeds, 3 trumpets, 2 horns imported from France, 2 trombones and six in the rhythm section not including Lofgren. I don't recognize too many of the names - Glen Garrett, Phil Feather, Bob Carr, Ron King, Mike Millar and Bob Leatherbarrow - but that's OK. There are plenty of excellent players in greater Los Angeles and I'm not there often enough to know them all.

| Lofgren has 3 big band CDs out, all on the Sea Breeze label - Heart of the Night ( 1995), Blues and Other Passions (1999) and Red Shift (2003).

| There's an amusing blurb for the Lighthouse on the show flyer. " at the celebrated film location of 'La La Land'" The movie La La land used a scene or two filmed at the Lighthouse. I have not seen the movie myself but I think it was nominated for the Oscar for best movie. Whether its jazz content is enough to make it a worthwhile watch is above my pay grade. I would have preferred that they use a tag line something like " the club that Howard ( Rumsey ) built" or " the birthplace of West coast jazz." But I guess you have to try and appeal to the millenials in our youth obsessed society.

| I think I buried the lead. Mandatory Kenton content. Kenton alumnus Kim Richmond is listed as part of the reed section. The Legacy band pianist Charlie Ferguson is listed in the rhythm section. Kim is also a long time member of the Legacy band.
