NTSU 1961

NORTH TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY
1961

Moonbag

Here is another North Texas Recording, this one from 1961. This is probably the first band to gain national prominence from their 90th Floor recording and their destroying the competition at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival.

This tune, Moonbag, By Morgan Powell, began a whole genre of writing at North Texas which became known by this tune’s title, Moon Bag. It had various levels of acceptance among the students at the time. Its clearly a stepping stone to later works by people like Maria Schneider and Bob Brookmeyer.

Morgan went on to become the chairman of University of Illinois School of Music composition/theory division 1978-1983. He also had the misfortune of being my arranging teacher at North Texas for a year.
