Waltz For Debbie
Using a strong all-star cast of jazz soloists in various combinations throughout this 14-track tribute to Bill Evans, arranger Don Sebesky both cushions and propels them with his sensitive swinging orchestral backdrops of brass, woodwinds and strings. On “Waltz for Debby,” “So What,” and “Autumn Leaves,” we hear extended stretches of Joe Lovano and Tom Harrell, while Denny Zeitlin’s lovely “Quiet Now,” Sebesky’s “Bill, Not Gil,” and Evan’s own “T.T.T.T.” and “Epilogue” have clarinetist Eddie Daniels warmly putting the lie to those who wrote him off as a mere technician. On the second and third of these titles, he is joined by valve-trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, (a very welcome soloist and one long unheard from these days), vibist Dave Samuels, and now thoroughly respectable Larry Coryell on guitar. Altoman Lee Konitz, Coryell and bassist Eddie Gomez play on “All the Things You Are” and “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You,” while the vocals are handled by John Pizzarelli (Sebesky’s “I Remember Bill”), the New York Voices (Evans’ “Very Early”), and Jeanie Bryson (“Blue in Green”). The latter track also has a flute solo by Hubert Laws in follow-up to his own feature “Peace Piece.” The album closes with an almost six-minute “Jazz Talk” by Evans
