SWISS JAZZ ORCHESTRA - Live at Jazzfestival Bern
LIBERTANGO
Featuring: Paquito D’rivera, Claudio Roditi, Michael Zisman
The Swiss Jazz Orchestra is a big band that was founded in 2003. Though the band has seen many changes, there are still some of its initial members. The orchestra's origins lie in the Big Band of the Swiss Jazz School, the oldest college for jazz music in Switzerland (which has been part of the Art School of Bern Hochschule der Künste Bern since 2003). One of the orchestra's features is Monday Jazz Nights, a series of concerts which take place every Monday night at the venue Bierhübeli[1] in Bern. The Swiss Jazz Orchestra celebrated its 10th anniversary in the 2013–2014 season.

BLUE WISP BIG BAND
SWEET GEORGIA BROWN
Much like the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra at the Village Vanguard in New York City, the Blue Wisp Big Band has had a long running regular gig at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club for over a quarter century. The 16-piece group draws from a wide spectrum of styles and arrangements. Englishman Frank Griffith's contributions include a cool take of Horace Silver's "Strollin'" and the tense, driving "Ricochet," which sounds like it could have been written for film. Trombonist Paul Piller scored "The Heather on the Hill" in a setting that would have fit Woody Herman's repertoire, while his breezy scoring of George Gershwin's "Soon" is another gem. Baritone saxophonist Larry Dickson contributed the lush treatment of "Daydream" from the vast Duke Ellington songbook, along with an infectious Latin-flavored workout of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower." This regional group, like many of the bands which record for Sea Breeze, is one that is worthy of greater national attention.

MIKE BARONE - Live At Dante's
Tumbling Tumbleweeds
In 1968, trombonist Mike Barone had a rehearsal band comprised mostly of Los Angeles-based studio musicians who occasionally played for the fun of it at the legendary Donte's. The music on this CD was privately taped (the recording quality is excellent) and not released for the first time until 30 years later. Barone wrote most of the arrangements and the lineup of soloists includes altoist Med Flory (the future leader of Supersax); pianist Mike Wofford; trumpeter Steve Huffsteter; and the tenors of Bill Hood, Lou Ciotti, and (on "Juss Messin' Around") the young Tom Scott. The music is essentially swinging hard bop, even such unlikely material as "T" and "The Non-Viennese Waltz Blues." This is a valuable piece of otherwise long-lost musical history that has fortunately been saved by the V.S.O.P. label.

BARRETT DEEMS - 1994 CJF
SOON
Barrett Deems, 81 at the time of this recording, will always be best known for his stint with the Louis Armstrong All-Stars in the 1950s. After settling in Chicago, the drummer became the leader of a top-notch jazz orchestra which made its recording debut on this Delmark release. Deems, whose musical role model is Buddy Rich, is in top form throughout the set, which is a bit surprising considering his shaky health at the time. The performances (mostly veteran standards) are usually hard-driving and always swing.
Few surprises occur during this conventional date, but the music is very enjoyable and makes one aware of some of the many musical talents that reside in Chicago.(AllMusic)

WOODY HERMAN - WOODY'S WINNERS
GREASY SACK BLUES
Of the many exciting recordings by the Swinging Herd of the '60s, this is the definitive set. With such soloists as trumpeters Bill Chase, Dusko Goykovich, and Don Rader, and tenors Sal Nistico, Andrew McGhee, and Gary Klein, this orchestra rarely had any difficulty raising the temperature. Recorded live at Basin Street West in late June of 1965, this set finds the enthusiastic band featuring a three-way trumpet battle on "23 Red," reworking "Northwest Passage" (highlighted by Sal Nistico's long tenor solo), and romping on a lengthy version of "Opus De Funk" in addition to interpreting a few ballads and blues. A very memorable CD that is available as a two-fer, (Jazz Hoot/Woody's Winners), Woody's Winners is worth inclusion in every jazz collector's library.
Woody's Winners : Woody Herman And His Orchestra : Bill Chase, Don Rader, Dusko Goykovich (tp,arr) Gerry Lamy, Bobby Shew (tp) Frank Tesinsky, Don Doane, Henry Southall (tb) Woody Herman (cl,as,ss,vcl) Sal Nistico, Gary Klein, Andy McGhee (ts) Tom Anastas (bar) Nat Pierce (p,arr) Tony Leonardi (b) Ronnie Zito (d)
